About
A little of my story
Once upon a time I studied Finance at Monash University – then a carried my little briefcase and joined the big boys in the corporate world. Against everyone’s better judgement, I decided to take a break from finance and opened up a tiny little café serving desserts and coffee. It was one fateful day when a lovely customer came into my café and asked if I baked birthday cakes. Being young and a tad bit too cocky, I had this light bulb moment – yes why not? I can do that! It just flour, sugar and a bit of this and that isn’t it? O little did I know… It was after countless hours of youtube and pinterest that I taught myself how to bake. My customer did get her birthday cake. Not only that, but it was that moment where you hand over your creation and that look of (from my end, unexpected) delight – I fell in love. During that time, I fell more and more in love with all things sugar and pretty and gave me a new found appreciation for how there is so much design elements and intricacies in baking. With a lot of heartbreak and lessons learned, I closed my little café in 2014 but the desire to create has never left me. I learned that I was only just a child myself and having your own business whilst still learning who you are is a juggling act where too many balls will get dropped. Cayk. was brought to life in 2017. This was the year where I felt comfortable and confident in my own authenticity. There are a million bakers out there that will provide you with beautiful and perfection. My work is not about the commonly beautiful or perfection. I may often have icing in my hair or be in baking stained active wear when you meet me but I will never bring you just ‘same same’. Come join me on my journey – let me create for you or join me on my blog for my musings on juggling life, work and design. |
